More than 450,000 people have been killed, while 11 million are now refugees or displaced. At least 652 children were killed in 2016, 255 of them near a school. Another 850 were recruited to fight in the conflict. These are the unfortunate figures that have left six years of war in Syria.

What are the real reasons that have prolonged this war?

The Spanish professor Jose Antonio Egido explained that among the reasons for the war is the destruction of the pan-Arabism, the movement that seeks the integration of the Arab town nd of which Syria is cradle.

Western ambition

The United States and European powers want a divided Arab world to liquidate any progressive movement in the region. "Putting an end to Bashar al-Assad's government is to blunt the advanced and anti-imperialist governments in the Middle East," added Egido.

The analyst explained that other causes of the conflict lie in the objective of strengthening Israel and the monarchies of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain who are allied with the Western powers to maintain their geopolitical control in the region and therefore neutralize all Movement that goes against their interests.

Egido stressed that interests over Syria and its natural resources have lasted for decades. Already in 1957, the United States and Great Britain tried to control Syrian oil and have since acted in the region. By that time Syria had a much larger territory than it is today.

"Western powers fragmented that Syria and created Israel and Jordan, partner states of the imperialist countries and that are used to control the region," he added.

The repression of Arab resistance

Other reasons for the bloody war promoted by the West is to end the pockets of resistance in the Arab world. For Egido, halting movements in Syria, Iran, Iraq and Lebanon with Hezbollah is essential to strengthen the pro-Western Arab monarchies that oppose such struggles as the Palestinian cause and the creation of a Kurdish state.

Controlling the entire Mediterranean Sea and avoiding the spread of the influence of Russia and China in the Middle East is another reason that could lead to the elimination of the Syrian government. The participation of the Russian air force in the fight against terrorism and bilateral agreements have highlighted the rapprochement between the two nations, a situation that bothers the United States and its allies.

Coups against the integration of the Middle East

Despite the war, Syria maintains a strong presence in the Middle East and has strengthened its relationship with the countries of Iraq and Iran to create a common front against the Western aggressions. Striking the Syrian government is to hit the Persian country and its plans of interaction to curb the possible Syrian-Iranian influence.

Jose Antonio Egido said that attacking Iran is against the Islamic Revolution that has ruled the country since 1979. The sanctions against the country imposed and prolonged by the United States are a reflection of the interests of the West to continue its domination in the region.

He added that the West maintains the idea of balkanizing the conflict that is nothing more than breaking up the Syrian territory in a Sunni state, a Kurdish state and an Alawi province to break the Syrian people's historical and integrationist relations.
