Mexico City. - In a telephone interview from Ñuñoa, Ana Maria Cabrolier, Chilean journalist, speaks to news Guarded Funeral (1974) by Sergio Villegas: "Neruda's body arrived home on Monday 24 morning, we walk on Tuesday 25 General Cemetery, my husband helped lift the coffin, and we did not stay at the wake, to accompany the widow and sister Neruda until Monday night, my husband saw a list of nine people left throughout the wake: Matilde Urrutia, Laura Reyes, a couple named Carcamo, Elena Nascimento, Aida Figueroa, Juanita Flores, Enriqueta de Quintana and Hernan Loyola. There were few people at the wake because the room on the second floor of The Chascona was small, Henriette made a list of people who could stay and asked us the rest we left. "
The September 11, 1973, Ana Maria Cabrolier worked on Channel 7 (José Miguel Varas was the press officer for TVN) and Sergio Villegas ran the newspaper El Siglo, the marriage of journalists could not visit Pablo Neruda in the Santa Maria Clinic yet participated in the first demonstration against the dictatorship way to the cemetery. Before the trial for the alleged murder of Neruda, the book clarifies several points Funeral Guarded decisive: "Neruda's driver was arrested on September 23, I have no doubt, my husband had their interviews recorded at that time and we used recorders. It makes sense, after reading the context, Manuel Araya itself was on the Santa Maria Clinic on Sunday September 23, 1973 ". The widow of Sergio Villegas says: "I agree to do all the research possible to clarify Neruda's death."

MC. - Journalist Sergio Villegas published the report "Guarded Funeral" in 1978, when he wrote it?, Remember the circumstances?

AC. - My husband started writing the story when she learned that Neruda was admitted to the Clinic Santa Maria, took notes and worked quickly during the funeral and while asylum in the Embassy of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from September November 1973; know I talked to fellow journalists and some friends Neruda. Funeral Guarded was a chapter of the book: The Stadium. September 11th in the country of Eden (1974), here I have the editor's note: "The first edition came Stadium in Buenos Aires in March 1974", years later, the magazine published Araucaria: The lived history of Funeral Guarded (Spain, 1978) and the International Committee of Solidarity with Chile made a book of reportage: Funeral Guarded. The farewell to Pablo Neruda (Germany, 1984), were published several translations in Europe. The first edition of Funeral Guarded Chilean left in the anthology: The faces of Neruda (1998), and since 2003 LOM has reissued the book collection in September.

MC. - You Neruda visited the Clinic in Santa Maria?

AC. - There were days of repression, after September 11 took several fellow prisoners and my husband was in danger of being arrested because he was the editor of the newspaper El Siglo.

MC. - Accompanied the widow Matilde Urrutia at the funeral of the poet?

AC. - Yes, before the house had been destroyed Santiago, went to La Chascona Sept. 21. Neruda's body arrived home on Monday morning, 24 died on Sunday 23 September at 22:30 hrs. - On Tuesday 25 we walked to the cemetery, my husband helped lift the coffin, we do not were at the wake, we support the widow and sister Neruda until Monday night, my husband saw a list of nine people left during the vigil: Matilde Urrutia, Laura Reyes, a married couple named Carcamo Elena Nascimento, Aida Figueroa, Juanita Flores, Enriqueta de Quintana and Hernan Loyola, he went to his house to get blankets for the night. There were few people at the wake because the room on the second floor of The Chascona was very young, I was there, but Harriet made a list of people who could be at rest and asked us to leave. We stayed up late trying to order a little, dirty water running down the floor, the soldiers had looted the house, destroyed furniture and broke several glasses.

MC. - Retain the notebooks of her husband?

AC. - The book notes the report stage and Funeral Guarded were lost, my husband finished both jobs before going into exile, when he went to the airport with no luggage, imagine Sergio notebooks out in the diplomatic pouch of the Republic East Germany, because the Chilean military monitored the shipment of exiles. My husband wrote his book: The Stadium. September 11th in the country of Eden (1974) because many people came to the Embassy of the GDR; Stadium is based on the testimonies of survivors of torture in Chile Stadium and the National Stadium, as they were arriving refugees to East German Embassy my husband was extending his book.

MC. - Judge Mario Carroza studied the book: "Funeral Guarded" (LOM, 2003) to understand the context of the death of Pablo Neruda, how do you feel knowing that her husband's work was read and discussed in the judicial process Neruda Case?

AC. - Good thing served a purpose to do the book, my husband would have been very happy to know that something he wrote served to reconstruct what happened before and after the death of Neruda.

MC. - In "Funeral Guarded" says Hernán Loyola Neruda's driver, Manuel Araya, was arrested on Sunday September 23, 1973, when Matilda had him buy drugs ...

AC. - I said Matilde to Loyola, the story of the widow is on page 21 of the reissue of Funeral Guarded (LOM, 2003): "At noon on Sunday, ordered to Manuel Araya, a young boy who was the driver Paul, bring me some medicine or something else, but the hours passed and Manuel did not return. Later I learned that he had been arrested and taken to the National Stadium, which had a very bad, and the car cost me locate and recover ", unquote.

MC. - The newspaper "La Segunda" (9/24/1973) and "Guarded Funeral" (1974), agree that Manuel Araya was arrested on September 23, 1973, but the Foundation's Witnesses say that the driver Neruda was arrested on 21 or 22 September, who would you give the reason?

AC. - Neruda's driver was arrested on September 23, I have no doubt, my husband had their interviews recorded at that time and we used the recorders. It makes sense, after reading the context, Manuel Araya itself was on the Santa Maria Clinic on Sunday September 23, 1973.

MC. - You never suspected any irregularity or malpractice in the death of Neruda?

AC. - You ever talked with friends in Berlin, the thought crossed our head but we had no evidence or testimony. During the dictatorship killed several opposition leaders to Pinochet: remember the case of Orlando Letelier in Washington, that of Carlos Prats in Buenos Aires, mounting suicide Jose Toha, poisoning of Eduardo Frei, the attempt on Bernardo Leighton in Rome, or thousands of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances in the framework of Operation Condor.

MC. - What do you think of the complaint of the alleged murder of Neruda?, Would agree to the exhumation of the poet into his death?

AC. - In the Santa Maria Clinic strange things occurred, there died Eduardo Frei Montalva, so far did the research because relatives asked. Personally I agree to do all the research possible to clarify Neruda's death and the complaint would be transparent and would know the truth, we speak of a shot, do not know why they work so hard to approve research.

MC. - What do you attribute that Neruda Foundation is the main opponent of the research?

AC. - I spoke to Aida Figueroa and do not agree with the investigation, but not because she has scientific arguments, but because I'm sad to take out the bones of Neruda, is an emotive issue, I was of a piece with the Aida response, not countered, I respect their customs, she prefers to ignore the complaint because maybe Neruda himself killed. The Neruda Foundation have told me that at this point no one could find anything in the remains of the poet, but that decision is up to the judge Mario Carroza. I know that Matilde gave a broad power to Juan Agustín Figueroa and can not do many things without the permission of the Neruda Foundation, but I think that with a current judicial inquiry should exhaust all possibilities, do not understand why the Foundation not want to give permission to exhume Neruda.

MC. - What kind of experience has lived in the Neruda Foundation?

AC. - They discriminate the book of my husband, do not want things Neruda staining with Left, want him as the poet who suddenly pulled them out of hand, but that turned to communism. I got very frustrated when I discovered that in Isla Negra have the book embodegado Funeral Guarded (LOM, 2003), if you still retain the print run, maybe so did disappear, like so much of Neruda that obliterated everywhere, I can I say strange attitude Neruda Foundation to try to ignore a lifetime of active Communist, Neruda show for one type of people, for the elite. It bothers me not to put on sale in bookstores Funeral Guarded Isla Negra, La Sebastiana Neither the Chascona, do not account for the account of the death and funeral of Neruda's book my husband traveled the world. In Isla Negra each year became the staging of Funeral Guarded-in-theater adaptation, for 3 years canceled the presentation, Luis Alberto Mansilla was among project managers with an actress Isla Negra, every September inviting my husband to attend the presentation of theater. Before staging Chilean conveyed a German adaptation Funeral Guarded on Radio Berlin International, and guests commented on the book program with listeners.

MC. - Finally, when reissued the book "The Stage" (1974) by Sergio Villegas?

AC. - Next year LOM reissue: "The Stadium. September 11th in the country of Eden "to mark the 40th anniversary of the coup.
