Interview with Hernán Uribe / "Clarin", Chile

Ñuñoa. - In an exclusive interview with Hernán Uribe Clarín.cl Ortega (1924), speaks of the judicial inquiry into the alleged murder of Neruda: "The versions about death are a bundle of contradictions and an example is the mercurial version wrote: 'Later, as a result of a shock suffered after having been given an injection of painkiller, its severity worsened' (09/24/1973). It does not take an expert to know that relievers serve precisely to lessen evil and not to aggravate it. But much of the crimes are solved based on the contradictions of the authors and / or accomplices. The investigation of a judge to clarify the death of Neruda is indispensable."

Author of: Flash and death of Pablo Neruda (1983) Journalism Ethics in Latin America (1984); Operation Aunt Victoria. How to deliver the Journal of Che to Cuba (1987), The Secret War of news (1988) Journalism in the historical formation of the Latin American (1988), The fatal hour of the soothsayers (1999) and The Invisible gag. The market on the press (2000).
Imprisoned September 13, 1973, journalist Hernan Uribe managed to get a pass by the Embassy of Panama, later triangular exile in Mexico, was the first Chilean "denationalized" dictatorial decree in 1974, because of an article he published in the newspaper Excelsior. Decades ago, as a young man of 20 years, collaborated with Pablo Neruda's house in Michoacán de los Guindos: "When I got to know Neruda, to work with him as a sort of secretary, knew he was not a conceited person by reputation but by contrast, treated me with affection and teaching effort. I was with him and his then-wife, Delia del Carril, also on a plane home because I accompanied Isla Negra house for the weekend. Neruda finished my work with when he was elected senator, in March 1945, and as such was entitled to offices and secretaries in the Parliament building then located in Santiago de Chile ".

MC. - In 1983, you wrote: "Neruda was pushed to death. There are facts that point to the military coup in accelerating the death of the poet. " What do you think of the judicial investigation to clarify the alleged murder of Neruda?
HU. - Indeed in my book Flash and Death of Pablo Neruda, published in Mexico in 1983, ie, ten years after the coup in Chile, there is the possibility that the poet could be killed. Attended the murderous ferocity Augusto Pinochet and his court, those questions were logical because there are also more background. A key issue is to determine the real extent of the disease. In this regard I noted in the book mentioned above: "The evil, however, did not indicate an end so close and proof of that is that he was well aware of the events of those days more than that. He continued to produce and in his posthumous book I confess that I have lived. Memories, reads: 'I write these lines to my memories just three days of unspeakable events that led to the death of my great companion President Allende.' "With fiery words condemning the crime in a very coherent text. Such clarity, could it be the work of a quasi dying?
Neruda Case Another angle is the genocidal nature of the military dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet Ugarte. Last September, the coup met 38 years spread my article "emerge in Chile over Pinochet's crimes." In my article I argue that not all crimes were known in 2011 and continuing allegations of torture, murder and disappearances of people, quote: "A report that lists ten thousand victims of the dictatorship and whose names were not known before, was delivered on August 18, 2011 President Sebastián Piñera, of an investigative committee called Valech Commission. In turn, other data agencies in defense of human rights estimated at fifty thousand tortured and killed five thousand. " It follows, then, that the investigation of a judge to clarify Neruda's death is essential.

MC. - You called "syntax barracks" the official statement of the dictatorship of the cause of death of Neruda "after a long illness" (sic). How to interpret the contradictions of medical reports, the autopsy, the testimony and version of Mercury?
HU. - The versions about death are a bundle of contradictions and an example is the mercurial version, for example wrote: "Later, as a result of a shock suffered after having been given an injection of painkiller, its severity is accentuated "(The Mercury 09.24.1973). It does not take an expert to know that relievers serve precisely to lessen evil and not to aggravate it. But much of the crimes are solved based on the contradictions of the authors and / or accomplices.

MC. - Neruda was pursued by the traitor González Videla in 1948, years later, by intrigue, the CIA blocked the Chilean poet's aspiration Nobel Prize of 1964. Neruda? Would be a threat to the dictatorship of Pinochet?
HU. - Definitely in Flash and bites of Pablo Neruda wrote: "Pinochet had assumed that Neruda still sick and not be silent that his voice would have a tremendous moral force ... The Chascona sacked and besieged the residence on the slopes of Cerro San Cristobal, from there in the distance was visualized emerging from the fires burning books in the style of Hitler ... Since 1974, each year, the cable brings the news that the military regime has prohibited acts of homage to Neruda to try in various sectors his birthday, July 12, and in commemoration of his death on September 23. The books of the highest singer of Chile have been banned in their own country, have been removed from the bibliographies school and has also prevented the entry of their works published abroad ... On November 15, 1974, the Associated Press reported: 'The military government confiscated the summer-house in Isla Negra, the late poet Pablo Neruda, because the real owner was the banned Communist Party of Chile' ... The military coup zoo felt a hatred for Neruda because it represented the antithesis of militarism uncouth " .

MC. - Chapter: "Dead persecuted", outlined the suspected desecration of the grave of the poet in 1974. Do you need an exhumation to clarify the alleged murder of Neruda?
HU. - Of course you do, and more than that I consider indispensable. This has been done to investigate the suspicious death of former president Eduardo Frei Montalva and also to confirm the suicide of President Salvador Allende.

MC. - When last spoke with Neruda?
HU. - It was in 1972 when he returned to Chile after receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature (1971). The government of Salvador Allende led a tribute to the poet held in the National Stadium, with a capacity for 70,000 people at the time, and journalists had access to the VIP box. A huge demonstration in the absence of Allende who was out of Chile, chaired the Vice President, General Carlos Prats, the same as two years later in Buenos Aires would be killed by Pinochet's secret police. In November 1972, Neruda was not seen as a sick much less close to death.

MC. - Between 1944 and 1945, you were Neruda's personal secretary, how would you describe the poet in labor?
HU. - When Neruda knew personally, to work with him as a sort of secretary, knew he was not a conceited person by his fame, but by contrast, treated me with affection and teaching effort. I was with him and his then-wife, Delia del Carril, also on a plane home because I accompanied Isla Negra house for the weekend. Neruda finished my work with when he was elected senator, in March 1945, and as such was entitled to offices and secretaries in the Parliament building then located in Santiago de Chile.

Indirectly allude to it because I was the poet who fought his way to a job where I arrived in Mexico, in exile, in June 1974. I do not remember how it came, but the fact is I gave a lecture on Neruda called Casa del Lago. The talk "Neruda: Single and multiple" impressed because my text introduced the poet's voice in their own verses. The Mexican poet and teacher, Hugo Gutiérrez Vega was present, wrote a glowing article in the newspaper Excelsior, and then offered me the position of professor of subject in the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where, through contests, worked for fifteen years.

MC. - Are you interested in Mexico reissue his book: Flash and Death of Pablo Neruda?
HU. - I am keen because, objectively, is a text that does not lose today and is a journalistic documentary which designs the personality of the poet and the man. It also contains a selection of his poetry and interesting images, for example, the identification of underground Neruda to 1949-with the false name of Antonio Ruiz-it first published in 1983, and has since been reproduced countless times in books and magazines, without giving credit to the source: Flash and Death of Pablo Neruda (1983).

MC. - How participated in clandestine edition of Canto General?
HU. - This is a gag ...

MC. - Finally, on October 16, 1994, published the essay "Neruda fetishized" to 17 years away, what is your reading on the Neruda Foundation?
HU. - That my article published in the magazine "Punto Final" is a critique of the exhibition "The worlds of Neruda", organized by the Fundación Neruda. Certainly based on my visit to the sample where no one book!, But many objects acquired in various parts of the world. Hence the use of fetish or idol worship. I wrote then that "Neruda memory should not become another business, as may be inferred from certain ads Foundation". In fact, is what happened, read, tap the name and prestige of Neruda for businesses of various kinds. I also believe that such reprehensible institution holds reserves, and sometimes raises barriers for clarifying the truth about Neruda's death.
