Death of Neruda: Lack of resources paralyzes research
To 45 years of the death of the poet, the investigation that tries to clarify its death, still has several loose ends. The main obstacle to advance in the investigations would be a debt that the Chilean State would maintain with two international laboratories.
Pablo Neruda did not die of cancer. Neither suffered from a "severe" malnutrition as was said after his death.
Those were the conclusions reached by a group of national and international researchers in October 2017, after applying different exams to the remains of the Nobel Prize.
Surprisingly, the results of these investigations also showed the existence of a toxin that would allow reaching a definitive conclusion.
But despite these advances, today the investigation is paralyzed due to a debt that the Chilean State would have with two international laboratories.
The contributions of both research centers would have been key when it came to finding the new bacterium. For the same reason, from the poet's family, they point out that it is urgent that the State take charge of the situation.
In addition, they warn that resources are still required to apply a final examination that would be essential to close the case.
"This delay is taking damage to the investigation. A very important examination is missing for the final report and it is a commitment of the State that must be fulfilled ", said at the beginning of September, the lawyer and nephew of the poet, Rodolfo Reyes.
Death certificate of Neruda
The missing test corresponds to an analysis of soil samples from Neruda's tomb. This study aims to rule out the presence of the toxin in the sector. If this happens, it would confirm that the bacteria was spread in Neruda's body. By the way, the official version about the death of the poet would be buried.
Neruda died on September 23, 1973 at the Santa María Clinic, that is, exactly 45 years ago. His case was investigated again in 2011, when Manuel Araya Osorio, assistant to the poet, stated that at the health center, the poet received an injection unrelated to the normal procedure.
Later, in 2013, the minister in visit Mario Carroza ordered the exhumation of the body. Subsequently, in 2015 a report made byrequest of the Court of Appeals of Santiago was inclined by the thesis that the poet had died product of an injection that received. The origin of this vaccine is still unknown by researchers.
In the face of the commemoration of the poet's 45 years, however, from Neruda's family they warn that it is necessary to generate an international collaboration to complete the research. Spain and Sweden would have confirmed their help in this crusade
