The EU already recognizes Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem, albeit more discreetly than Trump

Viewers who saw the televised emergency session of the United Nations Security Council on Friday may be forgiven for thinking that the representative of the Palestinian Authority (PA) at the UN was trying to bore the Israeli ambassador with his speech.

Mansour's list was just words on wet paper. And it is completely false that AP representatives now say that Trump's decision undermines the role of the United States as an "honest agent" between the "two sides": the US government has always aligned itself with Israel.

 

This alignment has been particularly strong since the 1967 war when Israel attacked its neighbors and swallowed the remaining 22% of Palestinian land, prompting a new wave of refugees and fifty-year military occupation (of the West Bank, including Jerusalem Oriental). - Gaza and the Golan Heights of Syria) that endures to this day.

 

Since that war, the United States has sent billions in military aid to Israel.

 

The popular support in the US for Israel is the result of two main factors: religious fundamentalism in the form of radical Christian Zionism and the massive amounts of money from the Israel lobby given by fanatically Zionist donors, such as casino mogul Sheldon Adelson , who financed Trump's electoral campaign.

 

It is a combination of imperialist and religious reasons. Israeli colonialism on the occupied land of Palestine is seen by Western leaders as a "chalet in the jungle," surrounded by the "wild beasts" of the Arab world, like racist Israeli leaders (both Labor and Likud) often they say.

 

As such, the concern that is currently being expressed against Trump European leaders who lament the damage to the non-existent peace process is totally hypocritical. And, in fact, Trump's new policy in Jerusalem is just a more open form of the same malign politics that the European Union has been practicing for many years.

 

Despite repeated expressions of EU "concern" about the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the EU in practice encourages the ongoing ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.

 

It supports and even finances Israel with millions of euros in programs such as Horizon 2020, which funds high-tech Israeli research, delivering money from EU taxpayers to the apartheid regime and weapons firms that do "battle testing" with their weapons against Palestinian civilians.

 

And as my colleague from The Electronic Intifada David Cronin recently pointed out, "the Israeli Ministry of Science is one of the main agencies that coordinate the participation of that state in Horizon 2020. The Ministry of Science is not established within present-day Israel. On the contrary, its main offices are in occupied East Jerusalem. "

 

So, the EU in practice already recognizes Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem, but it does so more quietly than Trump. It is a kind of silent recognition. This kind of expressions of consternation towards Trump seems more to me a concern because he openly and proudly recognizes Israel and draws public attention to his flagrantly unfair, dishonest and, ultimately, unpopular policies.

 

In fact, the EU is so "worried" by Israel that on Sunday it was willing to reward Netanyahu with more high-level meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and later with the EU's foreign ministers.

 

 

The EU's expressions of concern about the continued Israeli ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians from East Jerusalem and the rest of the occupied West Bank are in fact diplomatic coverage that acts as the flip side of the coin
